The North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve education program serves to enhance estuarine awareness and to provide the crucial linkage between research and coastal management by translation of scientific information. Programs developed for school groups and the public include field trips, workshops, lectures, printed materials (e.g., newsletters, curricula) and self-guided tours. There are also opportunities for internships and volunteer activities concerning such topics as habitat protection and water quality monitoring.
As a major component of the overall education effort, The Coastal Training Program has the goal of promoting informed coastal decisions through science-based training for professionals. The following activities and products are used to reach target audiences, particularly coastal decision-makers:
Coastal Information Clearinghouse - searchable compilation of science-based resources addressing various coastal environmental issues;
Coastal Issues Workshops - training and information for community, government and private coastal decision-makers;
Publications - technical bulletins, brochures and other materials for decision-makers;
Community News - short articles sent to coastal towns;
Coast Live - interactive live video and video archives bringing new science from the field to decision-makers throughout the county; and
Reserve Education Staff - available to make connections, find answers and provide training and education services.
