Kachemak Bay Reserve, Alaska
K - 12 Environmental Monitoring Teacher Workshops
Kachemak Bay Research Reserve and Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies have teamed to develop a series of teacher workshops using G.L.O.B.E. (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) and other protocols to monitor coastal change with students. Scientific inquiry and environmental monitoring, including the collection and appropriate use of local or traditional ecological knowledge, will be covered.
Education staff will work with local students and volunteers each month to collect mud samples from random plots along a transect in Mud Bay, sift through the muddy substrate to isolate all clams, and record total numbers for each plot and the entire transect.
High School Mentor Program
High school students are selected to participate in the research reserve's Student Mentor Program during the school year under the guidance of reserve education staff.
