Hudson River Reserve, New York
“Doorway to the Bays” at Tivoli Bays Visitor Center
An exciting addition to the reserve is a new exhibit at the Tivoli Bays Visitor Center, titled “Doorway to the Bays”. Completed in the summer of 2003, the exhibit interprets the natural and human histories of the Tivoli Bays and provides local residents and visitors with access information. The visitor center is located in the historic Watts de Peyster Fireman’s Hall, which is connected to the Tivoli Bays by a 2 ½ mile footpath as well as roadways leading to a car-top boat launch.
“Doorway to the Bays” has truly been a collaborative effort. It was made possible by funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, in partnership with the Village of Tivoli, which generously provides space and support in the hall. The exhibit incorporates the Hudson River Collection, an active extension of the Tivoli Free Library, and the Shagabak Collection, native artifacts on loan by the Kinney family and the New York State Museum. In addition, the work of many regional artists and artisans help to tell the stories of the Tivoli Bays.
The Visitor Center is slated to open in mid-August 2003. Hours are:
Tuesdays 10am -2 pm
Wednesday 10 am 2 pm
Saturday10 am 2 pm
Group tours by appointment
