Hudson River Reserve, New York

Education

Educational programs draw on research conducted at the reserve, particularly coastal decision-maker workshops, teacher training opportunities and field studies.

Public Education
Hudson River Reserve View
The reserve's educational programs are designed to provide first hand experience with the estuary. Visitors can discover the reserve's lands and waters, and the host of life that abounds within them, by exploring on foot or by self-powered watercraft. Interpretive panels and brochures describe the ecological, cultural and recreational aspects of the reserve's component sites. The reserve offers free public canoe trips during warmer months in three of the sites. These guided trips offer a unique opportunity for the young and old to experience the natural beauty of the tidal marshes and shorelines of the Hudson.

An exciting new addition to the reserve is the Tivoli Bays Visitors Center. Slated to open in mid-August 2003, the exhibit "Doorway to the Bays" will introduce local residents and visitors to the adjacent Tivoli Bays, which can be reached by footpath from the Visitor Center in the Village of Tivoli. The Trailside Museums of the Bear Mountain State Park near Iona Marsh also have exhibits on the estuary.

The reserve participates or co-sponsors various national and regional events such as National Estuaries Day, the Great Hudson River Paddle, Great River Sweep, Hudson River Ramble and Hudson River Regional Festival.

Decision Maker Workshops

A new initiative of the reserve is collaborative workshops that will assist decision makers in the Hudson Valley in making informed decisions about managing and protecting resources in the estuary, including its watershed area by providing science-based training, information and access to technology.

For further information about educational programs or public access, contact the reserve office at 845-758-7010.
