Education
Education is a high priority for the Maryland Reserve. Reserve and site staff work together to deliver a wide array of programs for students, environmental professionals, teachers and the public. A Coastal Training Program is being developed in conjunction with several partners.
Programs include:
Estuary LIVE! Maryland hosted a segment of this live, Internet broadcast from Jug Bay. Scientific investigations of turtles and sora rails were highlighted.
Coastal Decision Maker Workshops: Information and resources on a various topics are presented regularly to professionals who make decisions related to the coast. Topics include submerged aquatic vegetation, beneficial use of dredged material, rain gardens, septic systems and the impact of Phragmites on the mid-Atlantic.
Otter Point Creek Environmental Survey: Students use science as a decision making tool as they participate in an interactive exercise which combines classroom, field and laboratory experiences.
Wetlands and Wildlife Field Days: This annual event targets 4th grade students in the Monie Bay area and is done in partnership with the Wildlife and Heritage Division at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Students learn about wetlands and the plants and animals that live there.
